An Odenton, Maryland man is facing animal cruelty and related charges following accusations that he beat his girlfriend’s bull dog in Salisbury last month.

Maryland State Police said Thursday that James Michael Watson, 37, was arrested on Oct. 30. Police said troopers responded to a report of animal cruelty at a home on Dogwood Drive in Salisbury. Troopers said that when they arrived on the scene, they determined Watson allegedly beat his girlfriend’s white and black bull dog named “Brooklyn”, after becoming jealous of the attention Brooklyn received from his girlfriend.

Brooklyn sustained significant injuries to her left eye, nose and a 2-inch cut to the top of her head. Brooklyn received immediate medical care from Healing Hands Animal Hospital, which will retain custody of Brooklyn after treatment, police said.

Watson was taken into custody and charged with two counts of animal cruelty and malicious destruction of property over $1,000. He was ordered held without bond in the Wicomico County Detention Center.
